Our Impact
Our one-on-one tutoring model has proven to be an effective method for fostering student engagement and student achievement. Our students have demonstrated progress towards their IEP goals as well as made significant growth on measures of grade level content. Students report feeling more excited about learning and more confident in their studies due to our specialized approach which puts their needs and interests at the forefront of our curriculum design.
Through our book club we have created an opportunity for young African American males to access texts from a variety of genres with characters who look like them and have similar interests and experiences. Our discussions engage students in meaningful discourse about social justice and social change and engage them in hands-on post reading challenges which bring the texts to life. Our model serves to engage families as well, as students spend time reading and discussing the content with their parents and family members in preparation for the next book club meeting, facilitating the development of a reading culture in the home. Through this program we have also been able to connect with African American authors and support them by promoting their literature both at our book club meetings and on our social media platform.
Empowering families to support their children’s growth and development is at the heart of our mission. Through our work we have had the opportunity to partner with families, sharing best practices for engaging students in meaningful learning experiences that will promote academic achievement and a love of learning. We believe in equipping families with skills and strategies that they can integrate into their daily routines in order to see their students become more confident and independent when completing their schoolwork.
